Cawood
The Club’s Annual Rally, Working Day & Ploughing Match was held at Cawood, near Selby on Sunday 7th October 2007 by kind permission of Geoff & Graham Liddle.

The weather on the day was glorious and there were lots for the visiting public to see.

Paul Thompson had 61 entries for the ploughing match and there were open and members classes for trailed, mounted and classic ploughing. The ground may have been a little hard in places but there was lots of good work done and difficult decisions for the experienced judges.

There was a good and varied display of static tractors and engines with cars and commercials also on show. The line of stalls was also well worth looking at.

There was a “scratching area” for anyone who wanted to use their tractor and machine in a non-competitive environment however the highlight of the working section was the vintage potato working demonstration.

The first part of the demo. was done with Ferguson tractors and machinery. First the land was ploughed, then cultivated before the ridging bodies made the rows. The Ferguson planter with 2 operators planted 200 coloured balls, which were used for easy visibility. Shortly after it was time to spin out the crop and 197 balls were harvested. A good return I think.

As the demo moved on, other makes of equipment joined in, added to the interest and spectacle while alongside a demo of horticultural machinery took place throughout the day.

Finally, for those who wanted to test out their tractor, a pulling sledge was just the answer and great fun was had.

Many thanks to all those who came to watch or who took part and particular thanks to those who organised what was an excellent event.  B.P.
